A sensible and calm approach to pregnancy, birth and postpartum
I’m Polina Westcott, a Connecticut birth doula and host of The Sensible Mama Podcast.
Having the right support shapes how pregnancy and birth are experienced. Through hands-on doula care and thoughtful conversations on the podcast, I help mamas approach pregnancy, birth and postpartum with confidence, clarity, and a strong sense of control.
My Approach to Birth Support
Birth works best when communication is clear, decisions aren’t rushed, and everyone in the room feels like part of the same team.
I work collaboratively with providers, asking thoughtful questions, ensuring clarity of information, and helping mamas stay calm and in control when it matters most.
I believe birth is centered around the mama, and that her experience will be positive when she’s supported, informed, and given space to trust her instincts.
This is how I help mamas during birth. I keep communication clear, decisions unrushed, and the focus where it belongs.

The Sensible Mama’s Glossary
Simple definitions for pregnancy, birth and beyond.
You don’t need a medical degree to understand your own pregnancy and birth.
What you do need is clear, simple definitions for the words being thrown at you by your provider, your birth class, your books or the internet.
That’s exactly what this glossary gives you.
Because knowledge is where it starts.
Knowledge leads to responsibility.
Responsibility leads to control.
And control is how you take charge of your birthing outcome, whatever that may look like.
This is not medical advice. It’s a tool.
A straight-talking, sensible, easy-to-use resource created to help mamas stop getting overwhelmed by jargon and start making informed choices.
Take control of your birth story, starting with the words.
